NEW YORK, KOMPAS.com - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has offered to send at least 20,000 troops as peacekeepers to Gaza to safeguard any future peace deal during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
“If and when the UN Security Council and this General Assembly decide, Indonesia is ready to deploy 20,000 or even more of our sons and daughters to help secure peace in Gaza or elsewhere,” Prabowo said.
He emphasized that Indonesia’s commitment was not limited to Gaza. “In Ukraine, in Sudan, in Libya, anywhere peace needs to be enforced and preserved, we are ready. We will take on that responsibility,” he added.
The president also expressed readiness to provide financial contributions to peace missions. “Not only with our sons and daughters, but we are also prepared to make financial contributions to support the UN’s mission of achieving peace,” he said.
Prabowo reaffirmed Indonesia’s longstanding role as one of the largest contributors to UN peacekeeping forces.
“We believe in the UN. We will continue to serve wherever peace needs guardians, not just with words,” he said firmly.
Highlighting the UN’s central role in maintaining global security, he voiced strong support for the international body.
“Without the UN, none of us would feel safe. Indonesia needs the UN, and Indonesia will continue to support it. Even though we are still striving, we know the world needs a strong UN,” he said.
Prabowo was the third head of state to address the 80th UN General Assembly session, following speeches by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and U.S. President Donald Trump.
The assembly opened with remarks from UN Secretary-General António Guterres and General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock. This year’s theme is “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights.”
